The nitrate reductase (NR) activities were determined in green tissues and roots of rye, wheat or Triticale seedlings growing on nutrient solution containing various concentrations of NO3 exp (-). Generally 3.75 mM NO3 exp (-) in the media was sufficient to obtain the maximum activity of the enzyme in green tissues. In roots, where the NR activity was much lower than in green parts, the highest activity was observed in the presence of NO3 exp (-). Rye seedlings demonstrated the lowest NR activity which was slightly effected by the level of NO3 exp (-) in nutrient solution.
