A host-parasite interaction model is used to demonstrate the dynamic of a parasite population in response to incorporation of qualitative or quantitative host resistance genes which, in turns, are conditioning unstable or durable types of resistance. Different strategies for resistance breeding are derived from this interaction model and consequences for appropriate assessment of disease reactions are discused. In composing quantitative types of host resistance three essential presumptions are illustrated, supported by results from experiments in a wheat/Septoria nodorum system: 1. To interprete reactions in host resistance, assessed by different
