Concentrations of sorbitol, fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose in singlegrains of 2 inbred lines homozygous for the mutations sugary (su) and sugary enhancer (se) were measured by gas chromatography. Genetic differences between IL451b (su) and IL677a (su se) were the primary source of phenotypic variation in grain sugar content, and while there was significant variation between ears on the same plant, there was none between grains on the same ear. Single grain analysis, it is suggested, could be used to detect the action of se in a segregating population.
