Actual and predicted performance of varietal crosses for grain yield and maturity in maize - 1985 - Printed

10 ref. Summary (En)

The predicted performance of two parent and multiple crosses developed from five composite populations of maize (Zea mays L.) was found to be comparable with the actual performance for various characters studied. The predicted percentage of heterosis also compared very well with the observed heterosis in F1 and similar trend was observed in random mated (F1r) progenies but not in (F1s) progenies for grain yield. The dominance effects in general exceeded the respective additive effects for almost all the characters. Exploitation of hybrid vigour appeared to be the most profitable breeding approach
