Field studies on the pattern of tillering, ear production and tiller survival in a two-rowed barley variety (Pallas) were carried out in Granada (Southern Spain) during 1982, 1983 and 1984. Crops were fertilized with different levels of nitrogen, applied both at seeding and at mid-tillering stage, and treated with foliar applications of sulphur and Ethrel during tillering. The ear formation capacity was closely related with N, S and E treatments. The increase of N doses at seeding leads to a high initial number of tillers per plant, while the N, S and E treatments during tillering increased their survival and thus the final numbers of ears.
