Tillering of Arkansas wheat cultivars and hybrids as affected by spacing

Tillering of Arkansas wheat cultivars and hybrids as affected by spacing - 1986 - Printed

Significant differences were evident in the tillering capacity of 16 pure line cv. and 2 hybrids sown at row spacings of 1-24 inches at Arkansas. Av. tillering rates ranged from 7.3 tillers/plant for the cv. Abe to 14.7 tillers for the hybrid HW 3006. The high tillering rates of this and the other hybrid tested, HW 3007, was also seen at the 1-7 inch spacing, more representative of those in current practice. The possibility of achieving savings in rates of sowing by using genotypes of high tillering capacity is discussed.
