Evaluation of two routine embryo test procedures for assessing the incidence of loose smut infection in seed samples of wheat (Triticum aestivum) - 1980 - Printed

5 ref.; Summaries (De, En, Fr)

The routine methods at present in use at the Official Seed Testing Stations of Sweden and Scotland for detecting loose smut infection of Ustilago tritici were compared. It was found that the Scottish method is simple, convenient, economical and more accurate. Staining of the mycelium is necassary for detection of loose smut mycelium in wheat. The mycelium was observed in the scutellum and never in the plumule bud. Laboratory counts based on scutellum infection were closely related to the number of smutted plants in the field
