Several populations of maize (Zea mays L), that were improved by recurrent selection for grain yield, were used to investigate whether improved seedling vigor was associated with improved grain yield. Ten maize populations were grown in 5 field environments with 4 replications in each environment. Emergence percentage (E per cent), emergence index (EI), emergence rate index (ERI), dry-matter accumulation (DMA), growth rate (GR), and relative growth rate (RGR) were used as indicators for seedling vigor during the first 30 days of growth.
