Mineral deficiency symptoms and responses to fertilizers shown by maize on soils previously cropped by smallholder farmers - 1983 - Printed
Tables, graphs, references p. 34-35
The effects of combinations of lime, 50 kg P, 50 kg K and 35, 40 and 45 kg N/ha on maize grown on 2 soil types were investigated. Meteorological data, soilcharacteristics and chemical analyses are tabulated. Av. yield without fertilizer on Lilongwe 2 soil series was 1.65 t/ha and on Kandiani was 0.95 t/ha. P increased yield by 50% on Lilongwe, but had no effect on Kandiani soil. In the presence of P, the response to N ranged from 36-40 kg/kg N on Lilongwe and 0-120 kg/kg N on Kandiani (with 43 kg/ha in the 2nd year). K slightly depressed yield in both years on both soils. Further applications of N and P didnot increase yields when given as the
