Intact seed of hybrid maize cv. was germinated and grown in the dark at 13øCor the hybrids were grown as dissected embryos or as dissected embryonic axes onnutrient agar. Plumule length of the hybrid selected for cool temp. tolerance was greater than that of the corn belt dent hybrid but there were no differencesin radicle growth. Growing dissected embryonic axes at a range of sucrose conc. showed that growth parameters of the tolerant hybrids were always greater than those of the corn belt dent hybrid.
