The economic and non-economic mechanisms which have subordinated Mexican agriculture to that of the USA over the last 20 years are explored. First, the main trends in Mexico's agricultural trade are set out, then Mexican-USA trade is considered specifically. The USA takes all Mexico's exported livestock, and 35-100% of its main crop exports. The USA is also the main supplier of Mexico's food imports, which have exceeded exports since the late 1970s. Food-farm development and its impact upon Mexico's foreign trade are described: changing dietary habits are promoting greater dependence on imports. Foreign capital and overseas trade are investigated,
