Differential tolerance to soil acidity among several South African maize genotypes
Farina, M.P.W.
Differential tolerance to soil acidity among several South African maize genotypes - 1982 - Printed
Tables
Low soil pH is a main factor limiting maize yields in many parts of South Africa. In 2 greenhouse experiments, 10 maize inbreds and 8 hybrids grown for 30days and given lime and P at various rates differed markedly in tolerance of lowpH or P, with inbreds B0155W and B046W and hybrids FP7W and HL 1 least tolerant and inbreds M162W and I137TN and hybrids HL2, TX24 and SR52 most tolerant. Acid tolerance was closely related to P use efficiency. High leaf Al content was generally associated with poor growth in inbred lines, but not in hybrids, but differences between the 2 groups were probably due to environmental variables. Leaf Al, P, Mn, Ca and Mg
