In response to the dialogue appearing in recent issues of Interciencia concerning the trade-offs of rain forests for beef products, namely hamburgers, this article examines the divergence between the private and social costs of public policies that subsidize livestock production in the Brazilian Amazon. Twopublic policies are considered: Brazil's regional development policy for the Amazon administered by the Superintendency for the Amazon Development (SUDAM), and Brazil's rural credit policies administered by the Brazilian Central Bank.
