Searching behaviour and cereal aphid consumption by Bembidion lampros and Pterostichus cupreus, in relation to temperature and prey density - 1988 - Printed
Tables, graphs
Maximum consumption rates were determined for the carabids Bembidion lamprosand Pterostichus cupreus feeding on the cereal aphid Rhopalosiphum padi at different temperatures in the laboratory. Mean daily consumption increased with increasing temperatures for both species, B. lampros consuming a maximum of 16 1st-3rd-instar nymphs and 9 apterous adults at 25øC. P. cupreus was particularlyvoracious and consumed 125 apterous adults of R. padi per day at 20øC. The behaviour of both species was analysed by video-filming starved beetles maintained at different constant temperatures in arenas sown with spring barley. The behavioural
