Information is reviewed under the headings interpreting leaf photosynthesis,influence of leaf dimensions, photosynthesis yield relationships, and extrapolating single leaf to canopy photosynthesis. The text is illustrated withexamples from a wide range of crop plants. It is concluded that improving leaf photosynthesis rate alone would probably not be very effective. Leaf area duration, especially in determinate crops, also needs to be considered. A decrease or elimination of photorespiration in C3 crops would give a potential for improvement that would be similar to or may exceed the expected genetic gainin leaf photosynthesis
