Genotype X environment (G X E) interaction and stability of CIMMYT quality protein maize (QPM) populations in Ethiopia - Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) CIMMYT|EARO : 1999 - p. 86-88 - Printed

Where environmental differences are great, as occurs in Ethiopia it may be expected that the G X E interaction will also be great, and as a result, it is not only the average performance that is important in variety evaluation programs but also the magnitude of the G X E interaction and the stability of genotypes across environments. Therefore, G X E interaction and stability analyses of CIMMYT QPM Populations grown under six mid and one low altitude environments of Ethiopia were made to study the nature of adaptability of the genotypes. Pooled analysis of variance showed that the G X E interaction was highly significant for grain yield. This indicated the adaptability of some genotypes to specific environments and the importance of early multi- environmental evaluation in breeding programs. Stability analysis showed that five populations (S91 SIW, S91 SIY, POB 63 TLWD-1, POB 64 TLWD-2 and POB 65 TLYF) gave reasonable grain yields (51-57 q/ha) but these were lower than the checks and they were fairly stable. It is advisable that more materials should be introduced/developed and evaluated to select superior and more stable varieties.
