Performance of streak resistant versions of six commercial maize varieties in Tanzania

Ukiriguru Composite A (UCA), Kilima, Staha, Ilonga Composite White (ICW), Kito, and Katumani are commercial maize varieties grown in Tanzania. These varieties were susceptible to maize streak virus disease (MSVD) which reduced their adoption in areas where the disease is endemic. Between 1986 and 1990, the National Maize Research Programme (NMRP), the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) collaboratively converted the varieties for streak tolerance/resistance. The resultant streak tolerant/resistant versions (SR) i.e. UCA-SR, Kilima-SR, Katumani-SR, Staha-SR, ICW-SR and Kito-SR were evaluated for yield and other traits in field experiments conducted in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Results indicated a 2 to 43% yield advantage of the streak tolerant versions over the current commercial varieties. The new versions were similar to the commercial varieties in other important characteristics. The streak tolerant versions will increase stability of maize production in areas prone to MSVD.
